#00046 - Work Wardrobe: Keep it Professional
I saw an article in a magazine about the do’s & don’ts of people’s work wardrobes. Now, some things I totally agreed on, others not so much. Keep in mind, many of us have completely different expectations at work. Some people can get away with flip flops at work (JEALOUS!), some people can wear nothing but a sexy outfit to work, and some people are forbidden to wear color (me!).
DOs:
- Follow dress code. If your company finds it unprofessional to wear a spaghetti strap shirt with your boobs hanging out, it’s probably for a reason - the customer base doesn’t appreciate it. There’s a time and a place for everything, just do what you’re told!
- Wear clothes that fit you! Highwaters, no matter where you work, are unflattering. If you’re wearing capris, and they look like high waters, get new capris.
- Dress for style & comfort. Are you working an 8 hour shift? Standing on your feet all day? Bring a change of shoes to wear for the last half of your shift if your heels are unbearable.
- Always be true to yourself. Some places have strict uniforms, instead of dress codes. Sometimes its hard to express yourself through those boundaries so different accessories or hair styles/colors could help reflect who you are trapped under that uniform.
- Keep your clothes clean and looking fresh. If you have to wear all black, like me, faded black isn’t cute. Buy dye to dye your clothes if needed!
Don’ts:
- Sweatpants. Unless you truly won’t be in contact with human beings, keep these at home!
- Shirts that gap between buttons. I don’t wish to see the color of your bra, and either does your client/customer/coworker. Get a bigger shirt or wear one under it.
- Stained and Wrinkled clothing are a NEVER!
- Last night’s makeup. If you had to roll out of bed for the day, like we all have, at least wash your face and redo your makeup & hair!
- Strong Perfume. If I can smell you 10ft away, it’s too much. Too much of a good thing is worse than a bad thing.
- Short shorts/skirts. If I wanted to see ass hanging out, I wouldn’t go to work for the entertainment.
- Dirty/Stinky shoes. If you can smell your feet after 10 minutes of wearing them, it’s time for a new pair!
I’ve been guilty of one or all of the above don’ts. But, the important thing is, I learned my lesson!
What are your personal stipulations and freedoms for work attire?
