Recently Reese Witherspoon has been seen multiple times sporting the Chloe Paraty bag made from python skin. Not only is this bag incredibly not animal friendly, but it’s also illegal to purchase it in California. In 2006 PETA named Reese “sexiest vegetarian” and anyone who has seen Legally Blonde 2 knows about its animal friendly message. With stylish alternatives so readily available, and as much as I love the clothing coming from Chloe, there’s no reason to spend nearly $4,000 on this bag. Especially when you’ve been honored by PETA and talked about your compassion for animals in the past.

Read on to see what PETA had to say and to see some animal friendly alternatives that Reese could have picked instead.

Personally, I think that PETA said it best with their statement of why to avoid python bags and accessories.

“Every year, millions of snakes are impaled on hooks or nailed to trees by their heads and skinned alive. Hoses are inserted into the mouths of large snakes—like pythons—and their bodies are pumped full of water to loosen their skin so that it will cut away more easily. The animals’ peeled, writhing bodies are then discarded, and it often takes days for the animals to die from the effects of shock and dehydration. We can’t imagine that she’d wish to contribute to this hidden suffering, especially for something as frivolous as a fashion accessory that can be replicated with no bloodshed. These days, it’s easy to have a look that kills without killing—with fake snake, mock croc, python pleather, and other designer items that pay tribute to the beauty of these animals without massacring them.”

If you want a python bag, there are several cute and animal friendly options out there. Check out the Amber Python Bamboo Top Handle Purse from Melie Bianco, the Primary Satchel from BDG or the Snakeskin Printed Clutch from Kimchi Blue instead.
