Reasons to Try Chia Seeds

By now, you’ve probably heard the buzz about chia seeds. Yes, those same little seeds that once were known for sprouting a green head of hair on ceramic figurines are now known for their health benefits. I first heard about chia seeds through the Chia Kombucha drinks made by Synergy. Used by the Aztec’s to supplement their diets, chia seeds are a great source of fiber and omega fatty acids. They contain more omega-3′s than flax seeds or even salmon (for the non-vegan readers of Logical Harmony)! These little seeds also contain lots of iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium and an array of vitamins. All in a serving of around 70-80 calories per tablespoon.
Need more reasons to try chia seeds? Just keep reading!
- They contain lots of Omega-3′s! – By now, we all know the many benefits of getting enough omega fatty acids in your diet. These things help your heart, skin, nails, hair… Pretty much everything. Chia seeds have more omega acids than flax seeds. This makes them a great addition to your diet, and you can use them just like flax seeds.
- Fiber, fiber, fiber! – Another thing that benefits every aspect of your body’s health is getting enough fiber. Chia seeds are a great way to make sure that you’re getting enough. Chia seeds have both soluble and insoluble fiber, which makes them a great addition to your diet.
- Chia seeds may help with weight loss! – Many people say that the super filling effects of chia seeds can help you lose weight. These little seeds expand because they absorb liquid and contain lots of fiber, which makes them perfect at filling up extra space in your stomach. They are by no means a meal replacement. Just a nice way to make your meals a little more filling.
- They help with hydration! – Since chia seeds are great at absorbing water, they are a great way to help make sure you stay hydrated. One tip I’ve gotten is to soak them in coconut water overnight. Not only are both chia seeds and coconut water amazing on their own, but even better when combined.
- Chia seeds are a good source of antioxidants! – This is another feature of chia seeds that will benefit you in too many ways to name. Making sure that you’re eating antioxidants will help your body inside and out. Antioxidants are especially important because they fight free radicals and keep your skin looking youthful.
Having moved on from the chai kombucha’s (though they are super yummy!!), I bought a bag of chia seeds at Whole Foods to add to things on my own. They are an easy addition to lots of meals. You can eat them raw or cooked. Unlike flax seeds, they don’t need to be ground up and can be eaten whole. Just sprinkle them on top of your food or mix them in while cooking. You can eat them plain. They are an easy way to add more nutrients to drinks. Add them into baked goods for an extra health boost. You can even make chia seed pudding with almond milk, which is a healthier way to fulfill your craving for something sweet.
Have you tried chia seeds yet? What are your favorite ways to use them?
