Portland Favorites: White Owl Social Club

Portland Favorites: White Owl Social Club

As you may or may not know, I’m from Oregon. The NorthWest will always have a place in my heart and is somewhere I try to go as often as I can. After my last trip to Portland, it make sense to me to take my documentation of the trip beyond a few pictures on Instagram and actually start doing blog posts on all the great places I was going and amazing food I was eating. Though my partner and I went to see two good friends get married, we also set aside as much time as possible to spend with our good friends Natalie & Curt (and their furry family!) and Erika as well. Last time we went on a vegan food-a-thon and had plans to do as much as possible on this trip as well.

This trip was my first time at White Owl Social Club. This bar has a great food selection for vegans and non-vegans alike, indoor and outdoor seating, a wide variety of local brews on tap, and frequently has live music.

Who orders coffee at a bar? After an early morning flight, I do! We went to White Owl for lunch and while their drink list did look amazing, I couldn’t pass up some Stumptown coffee. Anyone from Oregon can tell you that strong, dark coffee is the best. Few coffee roasters have gotten that down as well as Stumptown. My partner ordered a local kombucha, the brand of which I wish I would have noted. It was really fresh and tasty. Bonus – White Owl makes cocktails with kombucha! A must try for the next visit.

First up was Fried Moonbrine Pickle Chips with vegan ranch from Sizzle Pie. I love pickles so much that I regularly make my own quick pickles. There’s no way I could pass these up! Especially after the recommendation by Erika of Purrfect Pineapples. They were amazing! Not too soggy, but also not too crisp. They had a lot of flavor. Plus, the ranch was some of the best ranch I’ve ever had! If you go to White Owl, please order these. You will regret it if you don’t.

For the real meal, my partner ordered Vegan BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Burger. It comes topped with kale slaw, with fries and vegan fry sauce. As I’m one of those rare people who really doesn’t like BBQ sauce, I didn’t try this burger. However, I thought it looked pretty tasty and he seemed to agree.

A good beet burger is hard to find. So many are soggy or flavorless and just… Not up to par. However, the Vegan Beet Burger at White Owl was quite possibly the best beet burger I’ve ever had. It’s a beet and hazelnut patty that comes topped with Daiya jalepeno Havarti cheeze, pea shoots and carrot ribbons. This burger had substance and the hazelnuts were a really nice touch. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything with Daiya’s jalepeno Havarti on it.

You can follow White Owl Social club on Facebook and on Twitter. A partial food menu is also available on iDine if you want to call ahead with any questions.

If you’re in Portland or headed there soon, I strongly suggest checking out White Owl Social Club. I know I’ll be back on my next visit to Portland.

  1. That sounds delish! I lived in PDX from 2005-2007 and I miss it.
