Nail Care Tips
Whether you keep your nails natural, cover them with gels or acrylics, or keep them constantly polished, it’s important to take good care of your nails. Just like any other part of your body, they only give as good as they get. Here are some basic tips to help you keep your nails in their top shape.
1. Keep your nails and cuticles well moisturized. Use cuticle oil, hand cream, or (my personal favorite) Smith’s Rosebud Salve. Apply several times a day. A couple of times a week treat your hands to a warm olive oil treatment. Warm a teaspoon of olive oil in the microwave for around 20-30 seconds, massage into hands, nails, and cuticles, then put on some cotton gloves and let the oil soak in.
2. Let your nails breathe. If you constantly wear nail polish, gel nails, or acrylic nails, it’s important to give your natural nails some time to breathe. Wait a day or two in between applications so that they have time to heal themselves a little bit.
3. Use nail files/emery boards. File away snags as soon as they happen to avoid breaking your nails. Always file your nail in one direction, going from one side completely to the other in one motion. If you are wanting to trim your nails, use a file instead of clippers. Clippers can cause small breaks in your nails. You can pick up nail files in packs for very cheap, like a pack of 10 Revlon Emery Boards for under $2.00 USD, or spend a little more on a glass nail file that will last you for ages.
4. Take supplements for your nails. Biotin and pre-natal vitamins can help improve the condition of your nails. I prefer Biotin and do notice a difference in my nails when I am not taking it. It helps to strengthen your nails and makes them grow slightly faster.
