The Benefits of Switching To Cloth

One of the easiest ways to help the environment is by switching to cloth instead of paper or plastic products. Below are just a few really simple and easy ways that you can make a big impact.

+ At the grocery store, using a paper bag isn’t doing all that you can. Plastic bags are one of the most common pieces of litter all over the world. Plastic bags take longer to break down than paper bags, but paper bags are harder to produce. Instead bring your own cloth tote with you.

+ In your bathroom, switch to fabric shower curtains instead of plastic ones. They work just as well to keep the water from your shower inside the tub as the plastic shower curtains do. You can get a wider variety of colors, styles, and prints than with plastic shower curtains. While they cost a little bit more up front, you end up getting your moneys worth. Instead of having to throw them away, you can toss them in the washing machine to keep them looking fresh. When you do finally decide that it’s time to retire a cloth shower curtain, they decompose a lot faster and break down a lot better than plastic shower curtains.

+ Don’t use paper plates, paper cups, or plastic utensils. Buy some durable metal plates and cups to take on camping trips and picnics. Use regular metal utensils as well. If you usually use plastic utensils at the office, bring some metal ware. If you don’t have access to a sink to wash the items at work, you can always bring it home with you through out the week to wash it. A great place to pick up durable dishes for cheap is a second hand store.

I am not the best at this. I always get paper bags because I end up using them for various things (I never throw them away until they are totally tore up). But I cannot stand when people use paper plates for normal meals. Even camping I would use dishes. The only time I have plastic dishes is the containers take-out comes in, and I even make sure to rewash the wooden chopsticks and use them at least a few times before they’re tossed.

That’s awesome! :) I don’t think enough people our age do this!

I re-use any paper bags that I do get. And even plastic ones from places like Target, I save to use as trash can liners for the bathroom trash can or to carry food to work in. Growing up, we always had a set of metal dishes that were for camping.
