How To Make Bath Fizzies

How To Make Bath Fizzies

One of my favorite bath products are bath fizzies. They are an easy and fun way to add something great to your soak in the tub. Sometimes I buy the bath bombs from Lush, but most of the time I like to make my own bath products. One of my favorites to make are these DIY Baking Soda Bath Salts that my Mom taught me how to make. This recipe for making your own bath fizzies isn’t passed on from my Mom, but comes from the next best thing – Martha Stewart. I love love love Martha! She’s super inspiring and both she and her staff are full of so many great ideas.

What you’ll need to make your own bath fizzies :

  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1 cup baking soda (Please remember that if you want to make this a truly animal friendly item, use baking soda from Ener-G. They are currently the only vegan baking soda brand that I can find. Arm & Hammer tests on animals and Bob’s Red Mill funds animal testing in medical facilities. If you know of another vegan source for baking soda, please let me know!!)
  • 3/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup organic cane sugar (This could be subbed for coarse salt instead. Also, to make this a animal friendly item, select sugar that isn’t processed with animal bones. A few vegan sugar options are Trader Joe’s brand, Rapadura, or 365 Everyday Vegan Sugar from Whole Foods.)
  • About 6 drops food coloring
  • 10 to 15 drops essential oil(s)
  • Special equipment: 2-ounce travel-size spray bottle, plastic pipette, silicone ice-cube tray, storage jars

How to make your own vegan bath fizzies :

  1. Mix together the citric acid, baking soda, and cornstarch in a glass measuring cup.
  2. Pass this mixture through a  fine sieve or a flour sifter into a mixing bowl. Add in the sugar.
  3. Add the food coloring to your bath fizzies! Fill the spray bottle with water and add food coloring. Spritz mixture lightly (it should become damp but not fizzy) until the mixture can be packed with your hands.
  4. Use the pipette to add the essential oil to your bath fizzies. Add the oil, 1 drop at a time, until strength of scent is to your liking. Mix the ingredients until color is even throughout (mixture will begin to dry out; when this happens, spritz until packable again).
  5. Spoon into ice-cube tray and press firmly to pack the mixture into cubes. Let dry at room temperature overnight. Pop out of tray gently. Transfer to jars.
