How To De-Pot Urban Decay Primer Potion
One of my absolute favorite cosmetic products is Urban Decay Primer Potion (UDPP). It’s an eye shadow primer that, once you have tried it, you will not be able to go a day without. You can read my review if you don’t believe how necessary I consider this product to be. If you are already a fan, or have just picked up the product, check out the Tutorial Video at Frappelattes. However, at $17.00 a pop, it is definitely a product that you cannot afford to replace every time it seems like you are running low.
Odd enough, the inside container that holds the primer is shaped the exact same way as the outer packaging. This means that the round part in the middle and the flat part at the bottom are full of primer that you can’t reach with the wand no matter how hard you try. And, believe me, I have tried. Exactly how much product is left in the packaging after it seems like it is empty? More than you might think. How easy is it to remove the leftover primer? A lot easier than you would expect.
Having recently suspected that my supply of UDPP was gone, I decided that it was worth a shot to try to open the packaging and see if any remained. I had scraped and scraped what I could of the inside with the application wand and was no longer coming up with any product. Because of this, I was not expecting to find a drop left in the package.
There are tons of videos on YouTube that teach you How To De-Pot Urban Decay Primer Potion. But, after viewing many of them, I realized that a lot of the tutorials made things more complicated than they needed to. Read on to learn more about how to How To De-Pot Urban Decay Primer Potion and get more for your buck.

Many of the videos that I watched on YouTube instructed you to make several cuts through the bottle with a paring knife to get at the product inside. Not only was this dangerous, but also unnecessary. If you want to be extra safe, hold the Urban Decay Primer Potion package in place with a dish towel while cutting. Most tutorials instructed me to make a cut towards the bottom of the container, but not at the bottom. Using a serrated knife, as you should when trying to saw through things, I just could not get through the packaging. You can see the cut marks where I was instructed to cut but it just wasn’t a weak enough point in the structure of the package to break. Sick of trying, I decided to put my weight into it. Literally. I stepped on the package, which cracked the very bottom of the packaging and allowed the bottom seal to be easily popped off.

Next, I started cutting the packaging near the bottom of the widest part of the entire container. By sawing at it with a serrated blade, and not chopping with a parring knife like most videos instructed, I was able to break through both sides of the packaging in a minute or two with very little effort. In this picture, you can see that there is still product left in the packaging.

I should have taken a picture of the inside of the packaging because I think that you would be just as amazed as I was about how much primer was left inside. Having cut the packaging open at the necessary points to access the widest parts of the packaging, I started scraping out the contents. Many videos that I watched suggested using a miniature spatula or another tool to remove the contents. Why bother? Just use the application wand! It took a couple of minutes, but it removed every last bit of primer left in the packaging.

I keep empty lip balm containers on hand for storage of random products. They are the standard size of a pot of lip balm that you would purchase at the store. As you can see, the amount of Urban Decay Primer Potion that was left in an “empty” package filled the entire container! I was shocked and amazed at how much was really left inside the container. Especially since, as mentioned before, no matter how much I scraped the sides with the application wand nothing was coming out.
So, there you have it. A very simple, easy and safe tutorial for How To De-Pot Urban Decay Primer Potion. If you have yet to pick up this product, definitely do! It’s worth your time and, with a little extra effort, definitely worth the money.

Very cool Tashina! I’ve always wanted to this because it seems a lot probably gets wasted. Maybe UD will get the hint and come up with better packaging.
thank you so much for posting this! I cannot believe how much of it is still left in there :X & you are right, the urban decay primer potion is amazing, it really does help my eye shadow stay on the whole day.

Well thanka alot for sharing this…. I always wanted to get the last portion of cosmetics out..but i never succeeded.. so i always had to throw it out..and waste it… but u are a life saver..
thanks again..i think i’ll be doing this to ALL my cosmetic products..
I just depotted my Sin UDPP a couple minutes ago after looking at this. I bought it two summer ago in LA while I was there for my mom’s birthday and it surprisingly lasted me this long. Last month I went to the mall with my boyfriend and was considering buying a UDPP in Sin, considering I was having trouble getting the product out. When I was going through my make-up, I remembered hearing about the depotting tip a while ago. I looked up how to do it and I was also surprised how much was left inside. I feel like it might have been harder to transfer though because Sin is a softer more gooey product than Original. So although I did waste some as transfer, it wasn’t as much as it would have been if I had just thrown it away. the good news is that this should last me for several more months, if not another year and that UD has finally gotten the picture and created a new packaging for this product.
