Five Beauty Habits To Start Now

We’ve all make beauty resolutions of one kind or another. We all mean to stick with it. But, we rarely do. While I think that most resolutions are made to be ignored, there are some that it’s important to get serious about right now. One of the most important tips of advice about skin care that I’ve found was that your skin only gives as good as it gets. If you don’t take care of it, you are not going to have the glowing and spotless skin that we all want to have. It doesn’t mean that you have to shell out lots of cash, go to the spa, or any other ridiculous notion either. You can turn your skin around with several small habits. Here’s my list of Five Beauty Habits To Start Now.
1. Wear Sunscreen : Seriously, this could not be said enough! Take a look at your skin in the mirror now. Then, imagine how you are going to look in 10 or more years after not wearing sunscreen – wrinkles, dark spots, dry patches… It’s not pretty! Time and time again I hear older women saying that the one thing they wish that they would have done was to wear more sunscreen. They make sunscreens that are specifically for the face, so they won’t clog your pores like they used to. Make sure that you are getting one with an SPF of at least 30. Apply it daily to your entire face, ears, neck, and chest. My favorite is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 55.
2. Stop Tanning : In this day and age of sunless tanners, gradual tanners, liquid bronzers, powder bronzers, and spray on tans, there’s no reason to be so mean to your skin. People who use tanning beds are not only going to see the effects of not wearing sunscreen but, since the harmful rays are being released closer to their skin, the effects are going to show up sooner and the toll it takes on their skin is going to be larger. Not to mention the risks of skin cancer. Just because you stop tanning doesn’t mean that you have to be pale either. Check out my Tips For A Flawless & Safe Sunless Tan, which will give you a healthy, safe, and natural looking tan in no time.
3. Drink More Water : Water is quite simply the best thing for you to drink. It not only helps your body flush out impurities, but a well hydrated body is going to have better looking skin. When your skin is hydrated it will look full and glowing, not dull. Stay away from the flavored waters that you can pick up at the store, such as Vitamin Water, because they usually pack a lot of sugar and preservatives. A lot of bottled teas are also full of sugar and preservatives. If you find regular tap water dull, try adding some slices of fresh fruit or vegetables. Citrus fruits, strawberries, peaches, cucumbers, and mint are all great additions. Or, add an extra health bonus by drinking caffeine free herbal teas which will add even more antioxidants into your body.
4. Wash Your Face Morning and Night : Did you know that going to bed with your make up on causes you to age faster? Take a few minutes to remove your make up and cleanse your skin. A few minutes now is going to seem like nothing compared to the damage that you could end up doing to your skin. We all have those nights where we come home late and just want to crawl into bed, so keep a stash of baby wipes on hand. They are the cheapest way to gently remove make up that I’ve found, and actually work better for me than the other more expensive make up removing wipes that I have tried. It’s a bit old and I need to do an update post but, check out My Daily Skin Care Routine for tips on how to properly take care of your skin.
5. Moisturize : Personally, I feel like you really cannot moisturize enough. Everyone should have an all purpose moisturizer to use on their face, eyes, ears, and neck. My favorite is Olay Complete UV Defense Moisture Lotion for Oily/Combination Skin with an SPF 15. This specific moisturizer not only helps to mattify your skin during the day and add some SPF protection, but it’s a great moisturizer. Eye cream is another moisturizing product that every one should have. Garnier Nutritioniste Ultra-Lift Anti-Wrinkle Firming Eye Cream is my favorite. On days when I don’t plan on leaving the house, I devote the day to moisturizing and apply it whenever I can. Once you start a habit of applying moisturizer, you will see a huge difference in your skin!
Remember that your skin only gives as good as it gets. If you take the extra steps to take care of it now, you will be very glad that you did in a few years. I’ve been pretty strict on my skin care for several years now, with cleansing, toning, moisturizing, etc. Personally, I feel like that is a main reason why, at 25, I am constantly mistaken for being 20. Starting these habits now will only benefit you in the future. Trust me, you’ll be glad that you took the extra steps. After all, it’s easier to prevent skin issues and problems then it is to try and cure them later in life.

Thank you! i found this post very useful. I never used to know how to look after my skin AT ALL. i would sleep in makeup, i would never moisturise, and would never drink water. As i got older i found my skincare routine, although this post has inspired me to drink more water than i am doing
I’m really bad at #1 and 2. =(
I notice that all liquid sunscreens give me breakouts! It’s a good thing that I read an interview with Cameron Diaz from a magazine. She said that she had the same problem so she switched to powder sunscreen. Colorscience is what she recommended. She said that she had tried EVERYTHING for her acne… proactive, prescription stuff, but nothing worked. Then she switched to powder sunscreen and hasn’t broken out since! I can attest to this too! I never realized that liquid sunscreen was the culprit to my acne…so if you have this problem, I highly recommend using Colorscience powder sunscreen. It’s amazing. I mix it with my translucent powder and wear it over makeup.
