Fashion Tips : Wardrobe Staples
Published March 3, 2008 at 9:38 am 12 CommentsI hadn’t given too much thought about the staples of my wardrobe until Katy made a blog post about the staples in her closet. It was a cute post, and it really got me thinking about what the staples in my closet are. Everyone is going to pick some of the same items, and everyone is going to have some completely different selections as well. Here’s a small list of my wardrobe staples :
1. Dark wash jeans. Skinny, straight leg, and bootcut. Each cut looks different with different wardrobe selections. A top that looks great with skinny jeans might have too much volume to look right with bootcut jeans. Or, a pair of shoes might just not look right with skinny jeans, but would look so much cuter with bootcut jeans.
2. Basic tanks and tees in a variety of colors. This is going to be on everyones list! But, it’s very underestimated just how far you can get with a basic white t-shirt or some layered tanks. You can wear one if you just want the focus to be on your accessories. Or use the layers as an easy way to add some color to your outfit. Plus, they are just comfy!
3. Converse Chuck Taylors. A.K.A. All-Stars or Chuck’s. These shoes are comfortable, wear really well, and go with nearly everything. I’ve lived in mine for years and years now (since before they were trendy) and will always buy them. I actually own 5 pairs – black, kelly green, raspberry pink, bright red, and leopard print. That’s just the start of how many I want to own. My black pair is going to have to be retired soon as the sole finally got a hole in it. After 6 years of regular wear! Converse and Journeys both have great selections of styles, prints, and colors.
4. A Go-To Dress. I don’t believe that every girl needs a Little Black Dress hanging in her closet, so much as I believe that every girl needs a dress she feels amazing in hanging in her closet. Something that you know looks good, that you feel good in, and that you can throw on quickly in a pinch. I have a lightweight cotton summer dress that I can throw on with flip flops or sandals, a tank underneath (it’s a bit low cut), a cardigan, and be good to go. It just so happens to be orange.
5. Flip Flops. I don’t believe that I’m the only person who considers flip flops to be a closet essential. I pretty much live in mine year round, especially now that I am living in California. I have around 20 pairs, give or take, in a wide variety of colors. Flip flops are great because you can use them to add a quick punch of color to a normally plain outfit, like a basic tee and jeans. My favorite are Old Navy flip flops. They are extremely cheap ($3.50 USD a pair or 2 pairs for $5.00 USD), comfortable, and last ages. I like to buy flip flops in colors that match layering tanks and tees that I have. It’s easy to look put together by putting on a basic color tank (in white, black, grey or navy), layered with a brighter color, some dark wash jeans or denim shorts, and then match the bright colored tank to the flip flops. I own flip flops by Victoria’s Secret Pink, Juicy Couture, Roxy… Havaianas make great ones. Tons of brands carry great flip flops.
I’m going to have to do a bit more thinking and write another post to finish this. When I open my closet, there are just too many items that I need to have in there! Lol. What are your wardrobe staples?
By the way, check out some tankless water heaters.

I love flips flops! II like to have them in every color!
My wardrobe staples…? eh…I gotta have a lot of jeans. I also own a lot of graphic teeshirts, and I can’t live without my bebe logo tees! I also wear a lot of skirts in the summer, but I seriously need to update my wardrobe!
I like to have them in a ton of colors too! The more options, the better.
What kinds of skirts do you like?
Usually short jean skirts.
Definitely can’t go wrong with those!
I love dark wash jeans because they go with everything … but I love all denim in general. Hehe. Damn I forgot to list flip flops too.. I think I’m too good so I love anything flat and flip flops are perfect. If I were shorter, I’d probably be wasting all my money on heels and wedges for the summer but thank god I’m not!
I’m kind of short but I can’t even live in heels and wedges in the summer. It’s all about comfort!
A fitted Jacket similar to a blazer is a good staple, I also like to have different sweaters I can dress up or down, simple ones, the kind you can buy for like $10.
Also Amogirls.com and tillys.com run good sales sometimes on converse so if you know your size, you can save some dough by checking out their sale/clearance sections on their website.
I didn’t even think about sweaters! I have so many cardigans too! They go with everything and are a great investment. A blazer is a good idea too.
Thanks for those sales tips! I used to hit up Fred Meyer back home because Chuck’s would go on sale for $20 a pair. It’s nice to know that they are affordable elsewhere too.
I agree with the list that you made. Flip flops are a must. I wear them everyday, wherever I go, they’re comfortable and has a girly touch to it. Jeans must be included in my list as well. I have so many shades, in different types and colors.
What kinds of colors do you have? I’ve never ventured into colored denim myself, but have seen others pull it off really well.
dont underestimate the comfort and versatility of a dress. from the soft ones that feel like a mens shirt, denim, sweater dress, shirt dress, i pretty much only wear dresses and skirts. but i dont even think i own a pair of jeans.
Great post! I have a similar list of staples. I’d also say that I have a couple cardigans that I love to throw over anything. I can’t wait for flip flop season…we’re not quite there yet in Vancouver. DC also has some super cute flats for spring, which I’m pretty sure I will be rocking regularly (they’re kind of Keds-like)… Once summer comes, I could live in sundresses…oh, how excited I am for sunny days ahead
