Cosmetics : Mascara Tips Part One
After my recent review of CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara, I received a comment from a reader inquiring about the best mascara for their lashes.
Mascara is probably the single cosmetic item that I could not live without. Even when you are in a pinch time wise, just a coat or two of mascara can really make you look polished by making your lashes darker, thicker, and longer. Since I’ve tried many mascaras myself, I know all too well that what works great for some doesn’t look so hot on others. All the formula’s out there can also make it confusing when trying to find the right product for your lashes. When shopping for your ideal mascara, it’s important to think about what you want the mascara to do. There are formulas to lengthen, add volume, help curl your lashes, and waterproof formulas. It’s also important to be aware of where your lashes need some help and what they are capable of on their own.
Those with lashes on the short side should use a lengthening mascara. The brush bristles on lengthening formulas are spaced farther apart. This helps to separate the lashes as the product is being applied. Following the mascara application with a lash brush can help as well.
For those with longer lashes, a volumizing mascara is usually the best bet. It helps to thicken each eye lash individually, making them look lush and full. The brush bristles on volumizing formulas are usually closer together than on lengthening formulas to help deposit more product on your lashes. Apply the mascara as close to the base of your eyelashes as you can for a great effect.
If you aren’t ready to try out an eyelash curler then a curling mascara can be a great extra item to have around. Keep in mind that, no matter what the company states, you are not going to get the same curling results from mascara alone as you would from using an eyelash curler. It’ll add a little extra oomph to your natural lashes, but that’s about it.
For those looking for a mascara with real staying power, waterproof mascara is the way to go. It can also help hold the curl left after curling your eyelashes. The great benefit of waterproof formulas is the obvious one of not having to worry about having raccoon eyes if you come into contact with water or during those hot summer days. If you use a waterproof formula be sure to give your lashes some extra pampering. A very light coat of Vaseline or Smith’s Rosebud Salve every night, after removing your make up, will condition them wonderfully. There are even rumors that nightly conditioning can make your lashes grow longer and healthier.
As I stated at the beginning of this post, mascara is my must have cosmetic item. I love trying different formulas, brands, and ways of application. I plan on doing a follow up post with application tips, brand recommendations, and more. Please let me know if there is anything that you guys would like to see in that post.

good tip@ informing about the importance of moisturizing lashes after using waterproof mascara. wp can be so drying on the lashes!
I totally agree that mascara is a must have cosmetic item! It makes ones eyes look bigger and not so plain Jane.
I’ve been using Rimmel Lash Maxxx and it’s decent, it doesn’t clump my lashes like a lot of other mascaras do.
Good tips foo.
Mascara is definitely a must have in my opinion as well! Have you got any opinions on clear versus black or other shades?
I didn’t know that about waterproof mascara. I always assumed it actually moisturized your lashes! How weird.
I completely agree with you – mascara is the #1 cosmetic must have. I could survive without foundation, liner, and blush – but never without mascara =D
