Kathy Freston for Vogue India

Kathy Freston for Vogue India

Just when you thought that veganism and mainstream fashion media would never reach, Kathy Freston was recently featured in Vogue India. This is really inspiring for vegan girls like myself who believe that you don’t need to give up anything about your style to live a vegan lifestyle – just make a few tweaks.

If you watch Oprah, or even keep up with celebrity news, you probably remember when Oprah and her staff went on a vegan diet for a week. It’s Kathy Freston that they turned to for help. Freston helped design a great vegan starter kit for Oprah and her staff. It’s a great guide for those who are interested in trying out a vegan diet. Starting a vegan lifestyle or diet is easier now than ever before thanks to great guides like the one Freston put together for Oprah and her staff.

This article let’s you know what her favorite vegan cookbooks are, why Freston decided to go vegan, how a vegan diet positively effects the environment and more. It’s a really great and informative read.

Reader Poll : What Brand Information Do You Want To See?

Reader Poll : What Brand Information Do You Want To See?

As you all know, I have an in depth process that I go through to verify that brands are truly animal friendly before I will promote them on Logical Harmony. Through this, I have confirmed that a lot of great brands are animal friendly (either completely cruelty free and/or vegan). Unfortunately, through this I have also found out that a lot of well known brands aren’t animal friendly either. Sometimes it’s a straight up confirmation from the brand, sometimes it’s a refusal to answer my questions, and other times it’s an intentional confusing answer.

I’ve been trying to just share the animal friendly brands with readers, but am now wondering if people would also like to know about the brands that they should avoid too. I really wanted Logical Harmony to be a positive toned blog, but am now thinking that it would be good to make more people aware of the brands that aren’t animal friendly. I’d really love your input on this!

Would you like to hear about brands that aren't animal friendly?

Venus Williams Now Follows a Vegan Diet

Venus Williams Now Follows a Vegan Diet

Tennis star Venus Williams has now adapted a vegan diet. After being diagnosed with the immune disorder Sjogren’s syndrome over the summer, Venus is now eating a vegan diet for the health benefits. Not only is she going vegan, but her diet will be mostly raw vegan food as well. The former meat lover recognized that having a vegan diet could help keep her symptoms under control. In support of her sister, Serena Williams is now also eating a mostly raw vegan diet.

A raw vegan diet means that nothing is heated above 116 degrees. This helps to keep all of the nutrients in the food so that hardly any are eliminated during the cooking process. It’s definitely a great way to get the most health benefits possible out of your diet.

We hope that spending some time on a raw vegan diet is what the girls need to realize all the long term benefits of having a vegan diet. There are plenty of successful vegan athletes out there, and there are more than enough ways to get all the nutrients you need for a healthy diet. We also hope to that Venus is able to get back out on the tennis courts as soon as possible!

Christie Brinkley Skin Care Review

Christie Brinkley Skin Care Review
Christie Brinkley wants you to look younger, too

Hi everyone. I’m Shannonmarie of Rawdorable, with my first contributing post to Logical Harmony. Before I get started, I just wanted to say thank you, Tashina, for this fun opportunity.

Now, back to today’s post. If you’re familiar with my blog, you may recall me mentioning some Christie Brinkley Skincare samples I was expecting to receive in the mail. Well, they finally arrived not long ago, and I went straight to testing them out for you.

I received a small packet of the Daytime Rejuvenating Treatment and another small packet of the Overnight Repair Treatment. To my surprise, it was a little more than enough to get me through my standard one-week trial period (I try to use a skincare product for at least a week before posting a review). I didn’t need much of the light day treatment, which absorbs nicely into my skin (the overnight treatment is thicker and tends to sit on top of the skin, so I’d advise using it sparingly, as well).

She won’t wear leather or fur, and likewise, opts to keep animal products off her skin altogether (with the exception of the occasional bee product, which she wishes some of her favorite products would reformulate to avoid them, too). She prefers to be as natural as possible (which is why a bee product may win over one with more chemicals), while still being a “girlie girl” type (a girl has got to express herself, even if it means sometimes sporting cruelty-free vegan nail polish, which is never totally natural).

Eva Longoria on Veganism

Eva Longoria on Veganism
In a recent interview with Health magazine, Eva revealed that she tried going vegan 15 years ago. Her vegan diet didn’t last long because she went about it the wrong way.

Well, I think the time that I became a vegan. I love the philosophy behind veganism, but I went from one day eating chicken and meat to eating just salad. I didn’t know how to be a vegan. I didn’t know about soy or almond butter. I didn’t know that there are great breads. So I literally stuck to salads. And I think I passed out the first week.

First off, let me say that a lot has changed in the past 15 years. I remember when I stopped eating dairy 10 years ago they didn’t even sell soy cheese in stores. Rice milk was new. You had to go to specific natural food stores in order to find anything that you could eat. There was no Daiya, Follow Your Heart, Gardein, Luna & Larry’s or any other brand that makes living a vegan diet easier. There was no amazing vegan cookbook section at the bookstore – no Veganomicon. You had to be really ambitious in the kitchen and you had to want to know how to cook. It was a lot harder to have a vegan diet then than it is now.

Now there are tons of resources for new vegans. There are online forums, cookbooks, and countless blogs to turn to for inspiration, recipes, and motivation. Not to mention, tons of amazing products in the grocery stores. Even Target sells soy milk, almond milk, and Gardein products. Some 7-11 chains are now stocking pre-made vegan food. The stuff is everywhere! With so many options readily available, starting a vegan diet is really easy. There’s an alternative for every animal product out there.

Are you interested in trying a vegetarian or vegan diet?

  • Why not request one of the many vegetarian and vegan starter kits! They are available from PETA, VegNews, Vegan Outreach, One Green Planet, and even Oprah has made one.
  • Check out all the great recipe resources for cooking ideas! My favorites are The Post Punk Kitchen, The Vegan Stoner, and Vegan Yum Yum. These sites all give you recipes for real food. Not just salads! Tastespotting and FoodGawker let people tag their recipes and have huge logs of vegan recipes too.
  • There are even lots of great Twitter users and forums where you can find more information and get support. The PPK Forum is really helpful. Feel free to follow me on Twitter and ask any question you might have. Check out the lists of who Klout thinks is influential about veganism for more social media accounts to follow.
  • Hit up the bookstore and do some reading! Skinny Bitch is still one of my favorite books and now the series has been expanded on. Veganomicon and Vegan with a Vengeance are great cook books for anyone who is starting a vegan diet. They cover all the basics you’ll need to make the transition. There are tons of other great books out there, but I consider these three must-haves for new vegans.

Other blogs are talking about this quote as if Eva had tried a vegan diet within the past couple of years. A vegan diet fifteen years ago required a lot more work than it does now, so I think it’s important to give her kudos for even trying. Would it be great if she tried again? Of course! But that’s a personal decision that only Longoria can make. Just like having a vegan diet is a personal decision that only you can make for yourself. I think that even just reducing the amount of animal products you consume is a great step. If you’re not doing it for the animals, then at least consider doing it for your health. It’s a lot easier than you realize.

Have you ever tried a vegan diet? Is it something that you are currently considering?

Best of Logical Harmony in 2011

Best of Logical Harmony in 2011

2011 was a big year for Logical Harmony. The site went from being just another beauty and fashion blog to having a fresh new focus. After I decided to live a vegan lifestyle, Logical Harmony also took on an animal friendly tone. It’s been a lot of fun to grow and adapt over the past year. It’s also been great to see what a lot of my long-term readers have also grown and adapted with the changes at Logical Harmony as well. I’m so thankful for all the new readers, companies who have wanted to help my vision, all the other vegan bloggers who have inspired me, and everyone who has been supportive along the way. There are three amazing new contributors to the site and so many new things to share with the readers. I’m really looking forward to the future of Logical Harmon and seeing what’s in store for 2012.

With 2011 coming to an end, it’s time to kick back, sip some vegan champagne, and reflect on the best posts from Logical Harmony over this past year.

Nicki Minaj for OPI

Cruelty free nail polish brand, OPI has teamed up with Nicki Minaj! The collection is due out in January of 2012, but I’ve got a sneak peak for readers of Logical Harmony. The nail polish collaboration between Minaj and OPI is everything you would expect it to be – super cute bright shades, great metallics, and a burgundy shatter top coat.

My two favorites are Pink Friday (of course!) and Save Me. I’d also love to see what the shatter top coat, Super Bass, is like in person. What colors do you like most from the Nicki Minaj for OPI collection?

Katy Perry Goes Platinum & Pink

Katy Perry Goes Platinum & Pink - Get The Look!

Katy Perry recently revealed a new hair style and color. Her sleek platinum blonde bob was offset with cute light pink accents. It’s a great combination that fits Perry’s personality. I love that she’s all about having fun and being ridiculous. Two things that I definitely try to bring into my own style.

Want to get a similar hair color effect? Try using the Manic Panic Flashlighning Bleach Kit to go platinum. Then use Manic Panic Cotton Candy Pink Dye. I’ve used at least half of the Manic Panic color collection myself and you get lots of pigment that will wear really well. Just keep an eye on the dye to see how much pigment is going onto your hair. It’s a lot easier to add more dye than end up with more pigment than you wanted. Not only will you have awesome Katy Perry inspired hair, but you’ll have achieved it using completely cruelty free and vegan products.
